A Message From Our President
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some
compassion, some humor, and some style.”
I am Treasure L. Carpenter, a senior, biology pre-medicine major from Washington, MI, a Spring ’17
initiate of the Gamma Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I have been blessed
with the opportunity to have served the chapter for over two years, and now I can represent as the 38th
Gamma Rho Chapter President.
Over the past two years, I have learned how to be a dedicated worker, how to make a goal and commit
to it, and how to properly delegate tasks that are too much for one person. These are not only lessons
that I’ve needed in order to serve Gamma Rho, but also the necessary skills that I will need to walk my
path for the rest of my life. I am so grateful for the trailblazing women who sought out an image of
excellence and created this sorority, and I am honored to be a legacy for the women who sought out the
purpose of serving the community of Jackson, Mississippi at Jackson State University.
Being an active member in this sorority has shaped my outlook on my own measurement of excellence,
so I am humbled to serve in the capacity of Basileus and implement my platform “L.I.F.T.” The “L” stands
for learn. We should continually learn from one another each and every day. Whether we’re learning
about each other, or learning a new skill, we are always learning. The “I” stands for invest. Whether it’s
your time, talents, or treasures, we must invest in the things that we want to achieve. That is how we
will reach true success. It may mean sacrificing selfish goals in order to reach a group goal. Also, we have
to invest in ourselves. We should remain confident in our talents, and know that we have the power to
complete anything that we put our minds to. The “F” stands for fulfill. Whenever we have a goal or
make a plan, it is up to us to carry out that plan to reach our goals. We must be dedicated enough to
finish what we start, and finish what has been started before us, in order to maintain the integrity and
prosperity of the chapter. Lastly, the “T” stands for teach. After we create a new legacy, after we
accomplish new goals, we have to be encouraged to teach those that come after us, and those that look
to us. This is how we will solidify the path of success and hard work that has brought our chapter
through 70 years of excellence. We want to build a legacy that will continue to serve the campus, along
with the community.
We as Sorors should be an inspiration for those who look to us. We should always encourage our youth
to dream bigger and aim higher. We should uplift each other to push harder, and strive for more. I am so
excited to be able to work with a group of talented women! They all have their own special quality that
will bring our chapter so much success! I pray for the prosperity of this chapter, and that we continue to
grow in excellence. We all have big shoes to fill, so let’s buckle down and get excited!
